Ganesh Chaturthi

They brought Ganpati to the neighborhood
It was, by far, the largest one they could.
The people came,
Chanted his name
Then danced to songs from Bollywood.

Ragrets

As Lady M said, "Out, damned spot"
Time has moved on; I have not.
Years down the line
I insist I am fine.
One day, the lie will get me caught.

ps- The title of this post is from my favorite joke in the movie, 'We're the millers'. From http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=no+ragrets&defid=7652005 :

Scotty P's shitty tattoo in the movie We're The Millers.
Scotty P- "This tat here is my credo: No Ragrets"

David- " You have no ragrets? Not even a single letter?

Scotty P- "No Way Not Me"

Happy 100 to me!

I am a hundred posts old!
Some terrible; a few gold.
And now from this peak
The answer I seek:
Should I stay or should I fold?

Aww look at the cutey kitty cat

Today, someone smuggled a kitten into office
Of all the reactions, I never imagined this.
Maybe its coz she's so tiny,
Playful with eyes so shiny.
Although mind control is also a hypothesis!

Note: T. Gondii is an actual parasite that alters the behavior (mind control!) of rats making them more susceptible to be eaten by cats - which is the only host where the T. Gondii can reproduce. It's pretty fascinating.  I remember reading somewhere about how it could also affect behavior of humans but I could not find proof of that.

Prime Day Disappointment

Prime day was to be a miser's gold mine.
I started looking at deals in office at nine
But the bargains were few
And really nothing new.
Though a fancy chef's hat is now mine!

Panditji

We were secure; our building was defended
With firmness and care, us kids were tended.
He knew great pain
But did not complain.
So many thanks.. And now his watch has ended.

Inertia

Oh, it is a bitter pill to swallow;
Much easier to whine and to wallow.
About fate and luck.
Ever the lame duck.
Where inaction is, consequence must follow.

The flipside of eating beetroots

"Eat more beetroots", the Doctor said
Luckily, they're not something I dread.
The only price I pay:
If I eat it today,
Tomorrow my, uh, output, is Red.

Happiness

The old person said, getting sappy,
"Learn from babies how to be happy"
I bit my lip.
But let slip:
"Sure. If you feed and change my nappy"

Cookie jar

Ah, the temptress sits in my line of sight
Every minute I put up a valiant fight.
But resistance is futile.
"I'll walk an extra mile."
If cookies are wrong, who wants to be right?

Note: The Cookie Master bakes fresh cookies daily for a $1 contribution. The cookie jar is right across from me. Most days, all that keeps me from sampling the goodies is the lack of $1 notes. Yay for the credit card culture!

Is there some minor inconvenience that ensures you make the right choice?

Birthday Hangover

Birthday hangovers are a thing I say.
There's all the excitement for the birthday.
There's fun and laughter.
Then comes the day after.
And the only cure is 364 days away

Be Healthy ... starting tomorrow

I made the promise before I went to bed.
It was time to do; enough had been said.
My rival on the trail:
An energetic snail.
I'm happy to report I came out ahead.

The increasingly poor decisions of me

Hitting "snooze" to start a hectic day
Despite Google Maps, going astray.
A good deed gone awry.
Risking a UTI
to attend a meeting I missed anyway.

Note: I wish the title was original. Instead, it is from the amazing serial: The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret Sometimes you really can judge a book by its cover

summer fun

To their delight, the children found
Water filled in the potholes in the ground
And made oceans for their boats,
the new avatars of last year's notes.
Avast! Adventures and thrills abound!

Would love to but...

"Headache is such a common excuse
It works only on the really obtuse."
"But, its real, the pain!"
You protest in vain.
A good liar doesnt face these issues.

Purists and Pop

Kylie Minogue made a very catchy, meta song.
Alanis did the same and its nothing wrong.
Pop lives up to its name
with fluff, fortune and fame.
If you dont like it, there's otheres; so move along.

Preserving our films; Preserving our past

Movies were made, impacted us and time flew.
Of their original prints, we don't have a clue
We need to find them and preserve,
Give them the future they deserve.
Whether they're black and white or even blue!

Note: Hugo opened my eyes to the importance of preservation of our films. I was delighted to read recently about the efforts in India to preserve Hindi films: https://in.news.yahoo.com/the-extraordinary-network-across-india-that-s-helping-restore-our-film-heritage--one-trashed-reel-at-a-time-052602235.html

Friends

The requirements for being a good friend:
Having a ear, minus the judgement, to lend.
Stand up for and by me
When it is dark or shiny.
Oh, and delete my browsing history at the end.

ps-  Ben E. King who wrote and sang "Stand by Me" died recently. http://www.latimes.com/local/obituaries/la-me-ben-e-king-20150502-story.html What began as a love song became an anthem for friendship after being featured in the movie, "Stand by Me"

The Grand Budapest Hotel

A rich woman, a charmer, a murder and wills
A hotel in the middle of really big hills
In 2014, the rise of the twerk
Was rivaled only by the quirk.
This movie has colors, laughter, awws and thrills.

Boyhood: The movie

I thought Boyhood was an amazing movie,
A highlight reel of life, love and family.
"But its just a gimmick..."
Complains many a critic.
"Nothing happens!" But, sometimes, c'est la vie
